ARTIST STATEMENT

As a professional artist who has been painting and sculpting for over sixty years, I have
always found inspiration through the works of the world’s great artists. I admire the
impressionists such as Renoir, Degas, Manet, and Pissarro as well as my favorite, the English
19 th century painter William Turner. His later works were dynamic and semi-abstract
portrayals of nature capturing the romantic concepts of art and literature of his time. I also
admire the sculptural works of Rodin as in “The Kiss” and later artists who worked in stone.
Having lived in the southwest portion of the United States, I often rode my horse into
mountains and canyons and have gained a love of nature which I have attempted to
incorporate in my landscapes. I firmly believe that artist’s creations, be they authors, painters
or sculptors, illuminate and describe the essence and development of the times which they
live. Artists portray the very sole of humanity and provide a window into the thoughts and
emotions of human kind. It is they who are the stuff of civilization providing an image of
ourselves to be evaluated by anthropologists and historians many years in the future.
I find that painting, be it representational or abstract, is an expression of emotion and
experimentation. Each brush mark, each additional color over another can be a visual feast. It
is addictive and like the movements of a great symphony, can evoke a vision of excitement or
angst or infinite beauty. I write my novels or paint daily and I find that there is never a day
without excitement, joy and wonder. The creation of art is a wondrous addiction for which,
most fortunately there is no possible cure.
