Mario Solazzo - Artist Biography

Mario Solazzo has been an artist with an inherent talent for discerning the colors, patterns and designs of the natural world all his life. He has sought to interpret what he sees in his professional business, and has had an avocation as an active artist and painter throughout his highly successful career.

Born in 1925 in New York of Sicilian heritage, Mario went on to create an extremely admired and internationally respected fabric enterprise. Inspired by his related travels to his motherland Sicily, then Italy, and further into the Orient, he was resposible for choosing and putting together the designs that made his line unique and desirable. Ever cognizant of his environment, he was driven to paint throughout his travels. The colorful sights and fantastic arts of other cultures continued to stir the artist within. Throuhgout his life, Mario has aspired to emulate the artistic styles of the time and combine them with his own view of the world. Having conquered portaiture, landscape, abstracture, photography and collage over the years, he continues to hone and update his craft.

In 1988 in Los Angeles he was given an acclaimed show for his specialized photography collages - wonderful, colorful, cubist compositions of world-wide people, places and architectural structures.

Solazzo, with his wife and long-beloved partner Margaret, retired in 2001 to Santa Fe, New Mexico, leaving the business to the children. Observing the color in the culture and landscape of the Southwest, Mario was inspired once again to adjust his palette and style to reflect in his paintings the environment and atmosphere of his place in time. Using pen and ink on acrylic color, his spontaneous, yet controlled use of line sets his work apart from the ordinary. The viewer is subtly reminded that nature is constantly in motion and alive with color and pattern, much as the Cubists' more complex, blatantly abstracted interpretations of the early 20th century.

In the 21st century, Mario Solazzo uses his unique command of line and composition to invite the viewer to follow him to walk into a field of wildflowers, cross over a bridge, wantder through a tangle of trees and foliage, feel the wind and fluttering aspens, jump in a freshly hewn haystack, or heighten the senses in the light, color and ambiance of southwestern architectural sites - all to discover the mysteries that lie within.

In Santa Fe, at the young age of 81, Mario has found the perfect locale for his life-long avocation to become his sole vocation. Painting over the last several years for his friends, private clients and admirers (he was featured in "Collector's Guide" in 2004), he is presently ready for gallery participation. In addition to his private studio in Santa Fe, Mario Solazzo's work can be viewed and purchased at the notable Jezebel Gallery in Madrid, New Mexico.
