Charlene Marsh - Artist Biography

Charlene Marsh has lived and worked for nearly twenty years in beautiful Brown County, Indiana where the air is clear and the water is pure and the land is alive. Her property borders Yellowwood State Forest where miles of pristine woods and steep hills stretch all around providing her endless painting sources and inspirations in all four seasons.

Charlene hikes two to four miles every day in the forest on trails she made herself. She backpacks with her oil painting supplies to create paintings on location throughout the year. Working "en plein air" she uses palette knives and paint straight from the tube to create the paintings. She then creates other paintings back in the studio based on the plein air paintings.

She has hiked up and down the rugged hills in the pouring rain, through two foot shows, ice storms, blistering heat, and bitter cold as well as on balmy spring days and crisp autumn evenings to paint "en plein air." Thunderstorms rage and crack around her and trees have fallen within seconds of her passing. The creek can swell and roar within minutes, the water cascading in tousling waterfalls down the steep hills. In the late summer, the creek dries up and becomes a docile refuge for thirsty creatures. She has regular encounters with deer, raccoons, possums, squirrels, beavers, rabbits, songbirds, herons, mallards, wood ducks, snakes, frogs, newts, and many other critters that inhabitant the area.

Every day in the forest is an exciting adventure. These paintings are a way to capture the essence of the peace, beauty, and wildness of the forest and bring it into our homes and work spaces. The paintings are like taking a piece of heaven home.

Charlene has two Bachelor of Arts degrees from Indiana University, Bloomington, with majors in Fine Arts and English. Her artwork is in numerous museum, corporate, and in private collections throughout the USA. She has won grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, Arts Midwest, and the Indiana Arts Commission as well a numerous awards all across the country.

Charlene shows and sells her paintings at top ranked art festivals such as the Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver, Des Moines Arts Festival, Plaza Art Fair in Kansas City, Lakefront Festival of the Arts in Milwaukee, Birmingham Fine Art Festival in Michigan, Art On The Square in Belleville, Illinois, The Uptown Art Fair in Minneapolis, and the Saint James Court Art Show in Louisville where she recently won Best of Show.
